TOPKAPI HAREM MUSEUM
For centuries, the Ottoman Dynasty and the upper-class women of the Harem lived at Harem Residence, where the sultans spent their personal time and lived with their families. At the same time, it functioned as a school with its own set of rules and hierarchy. The Harem Section of the Topkapi Palace is architecturally significant because it represents styles from the 16th to the early 19th centuries.
The sultan, royal mother, kadin (consort), Haseki sultan, royal favorites, princes, cariyes (wives), and the principal black eunuchs were the only ones who could enter.
Suleyman I. moved inside the Harem of Topkapi Palace with Haseki Hurrem Sultan and her family, creating an extreme hierarchy and structure that was disguised from the selamlik and other courts of the Palace. The ever-expanding Harem Residence got its final form after a long period of restorations and expansions within the Second Courtyard and on the back gardens.
